Travis Wins HE/KCL Event

The good news is we've had two photogenic winners in a row. The bad news is that this week it was Travis. Travis overcame the recent disappointment of his girlfriend turning legal to focus on his game and “play his best poker ever.” He also knocked out Bearded Mike early (11th), making it two weeks in a row that either Hank or Bearded Mike made early exits.

We had 13 entries with 15 re-buys and 13 add-ons for a total pot of $265. Baklava, in for the dead minimum, went out on the bubble. Sean placed fourth, breaking even in money. Hank placed third and left Lance and Travis to go head-up. Travis had built a huge chip lead and put Lance all-in holding a J9 suited, and took down Lance’s AQ when he hit two pair.

Ho Ho Hold’em (and KCL) – Saturday December 3, 2005

Don’t suck. Come to the tournament at Bearded Mike’s house on Saturday December 3 starting at 2 pm. We had 19 at the last tournament. $10 buy-in, $5 re-buys and $5 add-on at the end of the re-buy period. The structure will include 15 minutes of Hold’em and 15 minutes of KC Lowball at each level (so the re-buy period will include three rounds each of Hold’em and KCL).

If you’re used to being dealt sucky hands, KCL is for you. If you’ve never played, remember that Kelvin never played Triple Draw Lowball before winning first place in the TDL tournament November 6.

To see one of the best final tables ever, which happened to be KCL in 2004, check out the ESPN coverage that never made it on TV.

Todd (Shortcake) Cruises Through Field of 19

League-leader Hank was the first to exit when he pushed all-in with a flush draw and was called by eventual second-place finisher Lance. As a recent e-mail signature indicates ("Hank....Fucking Holdem....Rohrs"), hold'em is not Hank's best game. Still, until a point system gets worked out he's atop the leader board in total cash at $290. The field of 19 was large enough, and had enough re-buys, that Todd’s win ranks fourth in payout after just one tournament.

At our last tournament, Lance (Piaza) won $2,200…playing on-line. His showing in the live tournament suffered, but he didn’t care much on that particular day. This week, he wanted to finished strong before relocating to Vegas (Baby), and did so with a second place finish. The final table enjoyed the services of a full-time dealer (thanks Tim!) who kept the game moving, and thoroughly enjoyed the heads-up battle between Todd and Lance.

The final table enjoyed the services of a full-time dealer (thanks Tim!) who kept the game moving, and thoroughly enjoyed the heads-up battle between Todd and Lance. Todd played a re-buy the way you’re supposed to when you think you’re one of the better players – re-buy as much as you have to and keep the action going. With 19 entries, 21 re-buys, and 18 add-on the total prize pool paid out $385:

Todd (Shortcake), 1st, $30 in buy-ins, $165 cash and the coveted Champion’s shirt
Lance (Piaza), 2nd, $20 in buy-ins, $100 cash and a Jimmy hat
Sean, $15 in buy-ins, $60 cash
Steve (Baklava), $15 in buy-ins, $40 cash
Candy (Wrapped in a Sweater), $15 in buy-ins, $20 cash

Side-game action will be available after the re-buy period ends.

After ten total tournaments it's neck-and-neck. Hank moved into first by finishing second to Kelvin in triple-draw lowball, ace-to-five; a game that, of course, Kelvin had never played.

Although Hank seized the lead Sunday, the big news was Lance placing second in a free-roll on Full Tilt and winning more than $2,200. Lance started the final table near the bottom in chips and would have won the whole thing but for getting aces cracked by A2 off-suit – after runner-runner hearts hit. Congratulations Lance!

Special shout-outs to Sean, who bought everyone pizza, and Young Dan, who brought your humble host a Cuban (I'm saving it for after I take you head-up, sucka!).

JOPKE is a Triple Draw Story

For the uninitiated, JOPKE comes from an on-line confrontation between Paul Phillips and Phil Helmuth. This is stolen from Phillips' site.

Having heard about the great 2-7 game on UB forever but being unwilling to post any of my own money there, I finally borrowed someone else's account to give it a look. Wasn't long before hellmuth showed up and the game got even better. After about the fourth time he went broke he threatened to leave but the other players (not me) were begging him to rebuy. I was enjoying being anonymous and did not participate in any needling.

Here are a couple screenshots that capture the stimulating debate phil likes to engage in at the completion of a well-contested hand. I should point out that it's not like I sat around waiting for him to act like this. It's the first time I've ever played with him on UB and I in no way induced this behavior. This is just how he is. (click the picture for a larger view)

As a bonus, here is one of the most entertaining 2-7 pots I've ever not played. I'm in the big blind but right after I post my $80 the connection begins flailing and I am disconnected. UltimateBet must have some "all-in protection" but it's not worth much in THIS game. In holdem if you end up all-in with any two cards preflop you have a fair chance of ending up the winner. In triple draw, what are the chances that your random five cards will be better than those of a guy who had three draws to improve!?

And it's not like I'm up against the other blind here. The hand I have to beat was raised under the gun in a full game, and it's held by the most skilled poker player the world has ever known. I reconnected before the hand was over but it wouldn't let me jump back in and draw.

No problem.

(Most identifiable elements in hand history changed, but phil is his inimitable self.)

$1 is raked from a pot of $200.
paulp wins $199 with J 9 7 6 4.
And that, folks, is why the books will tell you not to go for those rough J9's in 2-7 triple-draw. Some JOPKER will always pop up with a REAL hand: the pat semi-smooth J9.

Hank The Tool (Hank Whores)

Hank is a tool. Because he had such difficulty playing real poker, he turned to low games and is now a low-ball specialist in Razz, KC Lowball, and Triple Draw Lowball.

Through 10 tournaments in Season One Hank has dominated with four titles, including HORSE, which includes Hold'Em of all things.
